Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and Onlays: Restorative Options for Damaged Teeth

Inlays and onlays are dental restorations used when more than half of a tooth's biting surface is damaged. They can be made of porcelain, gold, or composite resin and are bonded to the damaged area of the tooth. Inlays are similar to fillings and go inside the cusps, while onlays cover more extensive areas.

The process typically involves two appointments. During the first visit, the damaged portion is removed, and an impression is taken for custom fabrication. A temporary sealant is applied, and on the second visit, the inlay or onlay is checked for fit and then bonded to the tooth.

Inlays and onlays offer strength and durability, lasting from 10 to 30 years. They provide an alternative to full crowns when the damage is not extensive enough.
